Convert text into AI speech
Play.ht is a tool for turning text into AI-generated speech. As a new user, you are entitled to generate 600 words of text for free. To go any further, you'll need to make a paid subscription to the premium plan.
The tool works on the same basic principles as Text to Speech and SpeechText.AI: Record, Capture & Transcribe. It is capable of converting text into speech and allows you to choose from a broad range of different AI voices as well.
A simple process
Signing up for Play.ht is simple and free, and it is possible to use a Google account. Once you have logged in, you'll need to choose between individual and company options and then pick your project (videos, dubbing, games, etc.). From here, you can choose a voice, enter text, and export a sound file.
Choose a voice and an accent
The tool includes a variety of different voices, both male and female and with different accents. Each one has a name and a personality. For example, William is a confident American who laughs as he speaks, while Frederick is a more formal English voice, and Lottie sounds like a UK newsreader.
Choosing the right voice is easy
The menu system for choosing voices is broad and detailed. The various "characters" are identified by nationality, age group, ideal purpose (narrative, training, videos, etc.), speed, pitch, and general tenor (thick, round, gravelly, etc.). You can also adjust the speed of your chosen voice.
Useful despite having a few shortcomings
Play.ht suffers from some of the inevitable shortcomings of vocal AI tools. The voices all share a subtle metallic tang, and there is also the possibility that they will mispronounce unusual words or place an awkward-sounding emphasis. Still, if you cannot afford a voiceover artist, this tool will be a useful substitute.
